Waverly is a village of about 500 people with a historic district on the National Register. It is the most careful work on our map, and the reason we ask more questions here than anywhere else.
Connecticut families settled along the Warriors' Path here and called the place Abington Center before it was called anything else. Main Street is the old Philadelphia and Great Bend Turnpike, chartered in 1819 and finished in 1824. In the 1850s and 1860s the village had a larger Black population than Scranton did; it was a station on the Underground Railroad, and the AME church that freedmen built here still stands as a private home. The Waverly Community House runs a 25-stop walking tour, Destination Freedom, which the National Park Service added to its Network to Freedom in 2022.
The Waverly Historic District was listed on the National Register in 2004 for its late-Victorian and turn-of-the-century architecture.
